Tiger Moth G-MAZY Reassembled

Tiger MothThe Newark Air Museum informs Thirty Thousand Feet that staff and volunteers have recently reassembled and re-rigged the missing wing set on de Havilland Tiger Moth G-MAZY.

Back in the early 1990s, G-MAZY was rebuilt in a ‘half-covered / half-exposed’ configuration by volunteers at CARG (Cotswold Aircraft Restoration Group).

The airframe has been used as a teaching aid for the educational visits that the museum is now hosting, allowing both the structural design and the covered airframe to be seen in the one exhibit.

G-MAZY had been previously displayed with only one set of wings fitted due to restricted display space.

Details of the education and activities provided by Newark Air Museum can be found on the Education Page of the museum website www.newarkairmuseum.org.

While you're at it, don't forget to check out my trick little Google Aviation News from Thirty Thousand Feet link.

New Belgian Air Component pilots

sbapSierra Bravo Aeropics (perhaps better known as S.B.A.P) has a page up about the February 21, 2008, graduation of 8 new Belgian Air Component pilots at Beauvechain airbase. They've got some event photos, including the cool little Dassault Dornier Bréguet Alpha Jet.

If you want to learn more about this aircraft, see The Belgian Alpha Jet Homepage. It's all about the Alpha Jet and it's use in the Belgian Air Force, with history, maintenance, armament, drawings, photographs, and also details on the book "20 years of Alpha Jet in the Belgian Air Force."

Belgian Air Component event

Mirage 2000DSierra Bravo Aeropics reports:

On February 06 and 07, 2008, the Belgian Air Component organized two "Open Days", titled "Fly to Your Dream," intended to attract young people interested in a military career within the Air Component. These days were spread between the two main jet fighter bases being Kleine Brogel on February 06 and Florennes on February 07.

The young men and women attending found information about the Meteo Wing, the survival division, air traffic control, the fire department, and the flying staff. An F-16 flight simulator was available.

Aircraft used by the Belgian Air Component were on display along with some aircraft of the French Air Force.

The grand final was, without any doubt, the flight in an Airbus A-310 from the 15 Wing at Melsbroek offered to all particpants and 'intercepted' by F-16A/M from the QRA (Quick Reaction Alert).

Have a look at some great photographs from the event at http://www.sbap.be/news/fly/photo1.htm.

Questionaire for the virtual flying community

Gregor Selcan, a student of Faculty of Social Science at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia and a member of Virtual Flying Association contacted Thirty Thousand Feet with a request:

...I decided to make my diploma thesis from structural analysis of virtual flying community. Because of that I prepared online web survey (social, technological and information aspects of virtual flying community) accessed from http://online.aragon.si/stud/9905/KVLSlogn.htm. The primary goal of this study is to analyse members of virtual flying community from social, technological and economic aspect.

The survey ends 10th March, 2008 and the report is planned for publication in the Summer of 2008. Help him out if you can by participating in the survey.
